2016 Fantini Opi Montepulciano D’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG Riserva, Abruzzo

Few wines have done more to elevate the reputation of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo than Opi. Produced by Fantini, one of Italy's most dynamic and award-winning wineries, this flagship Riserva comes from the prestigious Colline Teramane DOCG, the highest classification in Abruzzo. Named in honour of the ancient mountain village of Opi in the Abruzzo National Park, it represents the pinnacle of the winery's ambition, combining old vine fruit, meticulous winemaking and the remarkable ageing potential of Montepulciano.

The Colline Teramane zone lies between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains, creating a unique environment where warm days are balanced by cooling mountain breezes. The 2016 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest of the decade, delivering fruit with exceptional concentration, freshness and structure. Extended maturation in French oak followed by significant bottle ageing has allowed the wine to develop extraordinary complexity while retaining impressive vitality.

Deep garnet red with a brick tinged rim, the bouquet is rich and captivating. Aromas of black cherry, plum and blackberry preserve mingle with notes of tobacco leaf, dark chocolate and cedar. Layers of leather, espresso, dried herbs and sweet spice emerge with time in the glass, reflecting the wine's maturity and pedigree. The palate is full bodied and beautifully integrated, offering concentrated dark fruits supported by velvety tannins and vibrant acidity. Hints of licorice, cocoa and earthy savouriness add depth, while the finish is long, seamless and wonderfully persistent.

This is a magnificent partner for slow braised beef cheeks, lamb shanks, wild boar ragù, aged Pecorino or a rich mushroom and truffle pappardelle. Already drinking superbly, it has the balance and structure to continue evolving gracefully for another decade or more.
