2016 Finca Allende Rioja, Rioja

Inky garnet in the glass, this wine has a nose of black cherry and eucalyptus. A sheath of velvety tannins wraps around blackberry, raspberry, mint, dark chocolate and clove flavors that glide into a long, spicy finish.

The serious, expressive and balanced 2016 Allende Tinto was harvested after October 10th with good ripeness and acidity, from a cooler vintage. It has integrated oak, and the palate feels quite harmonious, medium-bodied and with fine tannins. It matured in French barrique for 14 months. It's expressive, clean and very tasty.

There's a lovely sense of old Rioja about this beautifully mature red, although Finca Allende has never been a winery content to follow convention. Founded in 1995 by winemaker Miguel Ángel de Gregorio in the historic village of Briones, the estate works with old Tempranillo vines rooted in the limestone rich clay soils of Rioja Alta. Atlantic influences and careful oak ageing give the wines their distinctive balance of richness, freshness and savoury complexity.

Deep garnet red with a ruby heart. Black cherry, ripe plum and dried raspberry mingle with tobacco, cedar, leather and sweet spice. The 2016 vintage has developed beautifully, with polished tannins, balanced acidity and a lingering earthy finish. There's still plenty of fruit, but those wonderful secondary characters are beginning to steal the show.

Wonderful with slow cooked lamb and smoked paprika, wild mushroom croquettes, or grilled octopus with crispy potatoes and romesco sauce.
