2016 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese is simply one of the best wines we have tasted recently. Everything that you want and expect in an Auslese is here. The motherload of fruit is incredible. Rich and concentreated spiced apple, pear, peach and quince, is offset by lighter acidy tones of lychee and lime. A fantastic mouthfeel is complemented by a subtle saline hit, that just makes you swoon.
"A heady nose delivers ripe quince, white peach and mirabelle garlanded in lily and gardenia. The lusciously fruity, creamily rich palate is loaded with glycerol and inner-mouth perfume. A soothingly sustained, subtly honeyed finish perpetuates the fruity and floral elements as undulating layers in a way that is delicate yet thoroughly palate-coating, while a hint of salt activates the salivary glands. Christoph Schaefer reported that tiny, healthy deep-gold berries dominated the clusters selected for this ravishing Auslese, with only a few having become botrytis-infected, and that description certainly fits what one tastes."
