Alluvial gravels, mature vines and abstemious yields manifest as a delicious, pulpy, mid-weighted and highly savoury red. Leather armchair, dark cherry, damson plum and a cuff of vanillin oak (30% new, 14 months).

93 points Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion August 2020

Tucked beneath the Brokenback Range, Glenguin Estate is one of the Hunter Valley's hidden gems. Established in the 1980s and family owned ever since, the estate has built a loyal following for wines that emphasise vineyard character, balance and longevity rather than sheer power. The Schoolhouse Block takes its name from a historic school site that once stood on the property and represents one of the estate's finest expressions of Hunter Valley Shiraz.

The 2018 vintage is regarded as an exceptional year in the Hunter Valley, delivering ripe fruit, excellent concentration and superb structure. The Schoolhouse Block fruit comes from a carefully managed parcel of mature vines, producing naturally low yields and intense flavour. Traditional winemaking and thoughtful oak maturation allow the vineyard's distinctive character to take centre stage while building complexity and cellar worthiness.

Deep crimson red with garnet hues beginning to emerge, the bouquet is wonderfully expressive with aromas of blackberry, dark cherry and plum layered with black pepper, star anise, dried herbs and subtle earthy notes. Time in bottle has added hints of leather, cedar and savoury spice, creating impressive complexity. The palate remains remarkably fresh and energetic, with concentrated dark fruits framed by fine tannins and the medium bodied elegance that distinguishes great Hunter Valley Shiraz. A long, savoury finish carries notes of spice, earth and dark berries.

Outstanding with slow roasted lamb shoulder, beef and Guinness pie, chargrilled kangaroo fillet, smoky barbecue pork ribs or a rich mushroom and thyme pithivier. Already showing the rewards of bottle age, it will continue to evolve beautifully over the next ten to fifteen years. For lovers of traditional Australian Shiraz, this is a compelling example of the Hunter Valley's unique ability to produce reds of fragrance, complexity and graceful ageing potential.
