From one of Tasmania’s most historic vineyards, this is the more approachable face of Domaine A, yet it still carries the imprint of a very serious site. Stoney Vineyard in the Coal River Valley was first planted by Denis Hill in the late 1970s, long before Tasmania was widely recognised for fine wine. Today, under winemaker Peter Althaus, the estate continues to craft wines that balance structure with a distinctly Tasmanian sense of restraint.

Petit A is built as a Cabernet led blend, typically supported by varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Franc, drawing on the same low yielding vines that feed the flagship wines. The Coal River Valley’s dry climate and long ripening season allow Cabernet to achieve full flavour while holding onto freshness, something that gives these wines a more refined, medium bodied feel compared to mainland counterparts.

Deep ruby in the glass, the aromatics lean into blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum, layered with dried herbs, bay leaf and a touch of cedar. There is a subtle graphite edge that speaks to the vineyard, along with just enough oak to add spice and frame.

The palate is composed and savoury, medium bodied with fine tannins that carry dark fruit and herbal notes through a long, steady finish. There is a brightness from the natural acidity that keeps everything lifted, while the structure hints at its more serious lineage. It feels polished without losing that slightly wild, cool climate edge.

A great match for dishes that bring out its savoury side. Roast lamb with rosemary, grilled beef with olive oil and herbs, or even a slow cooked tomato and eggplant dish all work beautifully. It also pairs nicely with hard cheeses where the tannins and acidity cut through richness.

Drink it over the next five to ten years, though it is already showing beautifully with a bit of air.

There is an understated confidence here, a wine that sits comfortably between everyday drinkability and something a little more thoughtful, shaped by one of Tasmania’s most important vineyards.
