From Stoney Vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, this is one of the country’s most distinctive Cabernet expressions, shaped by a site that has quietly built cult status over decades. Domaine A was founded by Priscilla and George Park, and today Peter and Ruth Althaus guide the estate with a steady, detail focused hand. The wines have always leaned toward patience, often released with some age to show their true character rather than youthful exuberance.

Coal River Valley offers a unique setting for Cabernet. It is one of Tasmania’s driest regions, with low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cool nights that stretch the growing season. The sandstone and dolerite soils of Stoney Vineyard bring structure and a subtle mineral edge, while the climate allows Cabernet to ripen slowly, building flavour without excess weight.

Deep ruby with a gentle garnet edge, the aromatics unfold gradually. Blackcurrant and dark cherry lead, followed by cedar, tobacco leaf and bay. With time in the glass, more complex notes emerge, graphite, dried herbs and a faint earthy character that speaks clearly of site.

The palate is structured yet refined, with fine, persistent tannins carrying cassis and plum through a long, savoury finish. Oak is seamlessly integrated, adding shape and spice without overshadowing the fruit. A line of natural acidity keeps everything taut and focused, giving both freshness and impressive ageing potential. It feels composed and deliberate, a Cabernet that rewards patience.

It finds its place alongside dishes with depth and richness. Slow roasted lamb shoulder, beef Wellington, or venison with juniper all work beautifully, as do aged hard cheeses with a nutty, savoury edge.

Best enjoyed with a little air now, though it will comfortably evolve over fifteen to twenty years, gaining further layers of earth, spice and tertiary complexity.

There is a quiet authority here, shaped by a singular vineyard and careful stewardship, offering a Cabernet that feels both classic and entirely its own.
