2018 Moorilla Cloth Label Red, Southern Tasmania

Down on the Derwent River at Berriedale, Moorilla sits at the crossroads of wine, art and a slightly rebellious Tasmanian spirit. Established in 1958 and now part of the Mona universe, the estate has always done things its own way. The Cloth Label range is the more playful, expressive side of Moorilla, where the winemaking team leans into drinkability and character while still drawing on the pedigree of their estate fruit.

This Southern Tasmanian red is typically a blend built around Bordeaux varieties, shaped by a cool maritime climate that favours detail over density. Long daylight hours and slow ripening preserve aromatics and natural acidity, giving the wine a lifted, medium bodied feel rather than anything heavy.

Colour sits in a vibrant ruby spectrum. The nose opens with red and black berries, think cherry, plum and a touch of cassis, layered with dried herbs, soft spice and a hint of earth. There is a brightness to the aromatics that feels inviting straight away.

The palate is supple and easy flowing, with juicy fruit at its core and fine, gentle tannins providing just enough structure. A flicker of savoury character runs underneath, along with subtle oak that adds texture without taking centre stage. It finishes fresh and lively, making it a very versatile wine at the table.

This is built for relaxed, flavour driven food. Grilled lamb cutlets with rosemary, charred sausages, or a simple tomato based pasta all sit comfortably alongside its juicy profile. It also works well with shared plates, think olives, cured meats and anything coming off the barbecue.
