2024 Stoney Rise Pinot Noir, Tasmania

Bright ruby with dark cherry, boysenberry and doris plum, with underlying hints of fine spice, crushed herbs, purple florals, crushed rock and gentler tones of shiitake, shoyu and an expression of citrus zest. Some tobacco back there, too, if you peer hard enough. It sports a sleek palate shape, attractive pure fruits and powdery tannins with just the right amount of chew. It's pretty damn easy drinking, that's for sure. Drink to 2037.

Dusty dark cherry, clove-studded orange, plum, whispers of earth and forest floor, and ground nutmeg lead. With air, the earthy notes rise and become more prominent, and some delicate crushed violet florals enter the mix to add further allure. It doesn’t take long for the quality-to-price ratio to become clearly in the consumer’s favour. The palate is lifted and suave with lovely tension and elegant flow. Dark cherry and plum perfume sit above violets, clove, blood orange and gently turned earth. The acidity is a real feature here — it pierces through the finish like lightning — with a fine-but-firm sheath of powdery tannins adding frame. Good length and solid complexity. This is a very good offering at $38.

The 2024 Pinot Noir Stoney Rise is subtle and perfumed, with aromas of plum and dark cherry, a gentle plume of violets and spice. Whole bunches provide grip to fleshy cherry compote flavours, with meaty and herbal complexity on the finish. A handy bistro red to enjoy over the next five years. Drink to 2030.

The 2024 Pinot Noir is lean, spicy and textural, with chalky/waxy tannins that shape the fruit on the palate. The fruit is from Tamar Valley (north of Launceston, in Tasmania's north), and it leaves a distinct rose oil, rose hip, lavender note on the palate after it has gone. Perhaps it is an inclusion of whole bunches that is leading this herbal/vegetal/floral character, perhaps not, but it is a key feature of the wine. The oak framing here feels almost invisible: it is structurally supportive but nonexistent in flavour. Drink to 2034.

Bright ruby with crimson highlights, the bouquet reveals fragrant aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry layered with rose petals, warm spice and subtle forest floor notes. The palate is silky and beautifully textured, combining vibrant red berry fruit with fine tannins, lively acidity and a gentle savoury edge. Elegant yet full of energy, the finish is long, fresh and beautifully balanced, leaving lingering notes of cherry, spice and earthy complexity.
