From the granite rich hills of Beechworth, this Shiraz reflects one of Victoria’s most distinctive cool climate red wine styles, where perfume, spice and savoury detail take priority over sheer weight. Domenica is led by Domenica and Michael Chalmers, with a strong focus on site expression and minimal intervention, allowing Beechworth’s elevated vineyards and ancient soils to shape the wine’s character. The region’s warm days are tempered by cool nights, giving Shiraz natural freshness, fine tannin and aromatic lift, more in line with northern Rhône influence than classic Australian power styles.
The colour is deep crimson with purple hues. Aromas are expressive and complex, showing dark cherry, blackberry and blueberry, layered with cracked black pepper, violets, dried herbs and a subtle ironstone note from the granite soils. The palate is medium to full bodied, with juicy dark fruit balanced by bright acidity and fine, savoury tannins that give structure and length. There is a mineral, slightly earthy edge through the finish that adds seriousness and excellent food appeal.
Superb with grilled lamb, pepper crusted steak, slow cooked beef, duck and mushroom dishes. Drinking beautifully now with air, it will cellar confidently for ten to fifteen years, evolving toward more savoury, leathery and spice driven complexity.
