Winner Best Mornington Chardonnay, Australian Chardonnay Challenge 2019
2018 was an outstanding vintage. Yields were generous, and all the varieties are of exceptional quality.
The fruit for this wine came from own ‘Estate’ vineyard, and Callanan’s Road vineyard. The fruit was handpicked, whole bunch pressed, and the unclarified juice was fermented in French oak puncheons (35% new). Initially it was stirred monthly in barrel, to build weight and complexity. It did not go through malolactic fermentation.
The nose is complex and intriguing, with delicately nuanced aromas of citrus and white nectarine, with appealing sulphide and nutty barrel ferment notes. The wine has good palate weight, racy acid and excellent length.
It doesn't play to the crowd it plays to the glass. It's intense with varietal flavour but it doesn't in any way seem tricked up; there's oak but it's slight, the main shooting match is based on stone fruit, ginger and grapefruit. It's a good wine to be around, for its confidence as much as for its flavour.
