The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru has a crisp, classically styled, crushed rock and slightly chalky bouquet, the tightly coiled red and black fruit overshadowed by that stony facade. The palate conveys a lot of nascent energy, offering bright red berries laced with blood orange and brown spices, and leading to a precise and very persistent finish. Superb.

Mid purple, a gentle discreet nose, this is very fine but does not quite have the same impact as the brilliant Nuits Murgers des Cras which I have just tasted. The whole bunches dance prettily through a forest of fruit which is much more intense than the nose led me to believe. Cracking finish too, a touch riper than the Nuits.
