Col d’Orcia Gineprone Chianti DOCG is a vibrant, aromatic and classically structured Tuscan red that reflects the estate’s long commitment to organic farming and traditional winemaking. Although Col d’Orcia is best known for its Brunello in Montalcino, the same philosophy of respect for land and vine guides Gineprone. The grapes come from hillside vineyards rich in clay, limestone and ancient marl, soils that give Sangiovese its trademark tension, red fruited clarity and savoury edge. The name Gineprone refers to juniper bushes that grow wild around the estate, hinting at the herbal, Mediterranean lift found in the wine.
Hand harvested Sangiovese forms the backbone of the blend, supported by small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for roundness and gentle depth. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve freshness, followed by ageing in a combination of large casks and neutral barrels. The aim is to keep the wine bright, pure and unmistakably Tuscan while adding just enough structure for versatility at the table.
The aromatics are lifted and inviting. Red cherry, plum and wild berries mingle with rose petals, sweet herbs, cedar, warm earth and a subtle hint of juniper like spice. As the wine opens, notes of pomegranate, tea leaf, orange peel and soft baking spice weave through the bouquet, creating both brightness and savoury charm.
The palate is supple, energetic and beautifully balanced. Juicy red fruits flow across fine, chalk edged tannins, guided by lively acidity that gives the wine its refreshing, mouthwatering tension. Flavours of cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, savoury spice and sweet earth build gently, finishing clean, dry and classically Tuscan with a lingering bitter cherry snap. Ready to drink now, it will continue to gain earthy nuance over the next three to five years.
Wonderful with everyday Italian cooking. Think tomato based pasta, pizza with herbs, roasted chicken, grilled sausages, slow cooked beans, mushroom risotto, chargrilled vegetables, pecorino, salumi or simple weeknight dishes built on olive oil and garlic.
