The Frescobaldi 2020 Chianti Rufina Riserva Nipozzano has dark plummy fruit and presents lots of fun but basic primary intensity. I like the wine's fresh and fruit-forward profile, and I can't image a more suited partner to a plate of spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce. The effect is simple, but the wine shows good energy and brightness. This is a massive release of one million bottles.

A firm and focused red with cherry, bark and hints of wood. Medium body, slightly chewy and a fresh finish. Attractive structure and balance. Drink or hold.

The Sangiovese grape shows its vibrant best from vineyards in the Chianti region. The Chianti Rufina district lies to the north of the Chianti Classico but many regard Rufina wines as the equal to most Classico bottlings. Frescobaldi’s Riserva Nipozzano is a Sangiovese-based wine from Chianti Rufina and shows exemplary style and character for a very affordable price. This wine was fermented in traditional concrete vats and aged in barriques and shows a deft balance between fruit and oak. The 2020 Riserva Nipozzano is sleek and stylish, offering layers of pure, ripe, cherry, raspberry and red plum fruits interwoven with lovely floral, herb, earth and spice elements. The multilayered flavors show brilliantly pure red cherry fruit of the Sangiovese backed by hints of raspberry, citrus peel, herbs, vanilla and baking spices. It is a delicious example of the invigorating quality of the Sangiovese grape.

Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG from Tuscany is a wine that brings together tradition, heritage, and the bold character of Chianti in a bottle. The Frescobaldi family has been crafting wines for over 700 years, and this one truly reflects their passion and dedication. Hailing from the Chianti Rufina region, which is known for its higher altitudes and cooler climate, this Riserva offers a unique spin on the classic Chianti style—full of energy, depth, and that unmistakable Tuscan flair.

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Nipozzano estate, where the land's limestone-rich soils and the region’s cool mountain breezes give the Sangiovese grapes the perfect environment to ripen slowly, retaining their natural acidity and freshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels, which adds complexity and smoothness, while still allowing the bright fruit character to shine through.

In the glass, it’s got that deep ruby red color, inviting you in. The nose is immediately expressive, with aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries, and plums, paired with a touch of earthy leather, dried herbs, and a bit of spice—think cinnamon and cloves. There’s also that classic Tuscan note of tobacco, making it feel like you're sitting in the rolling hills of Chianti, with the warmth of the sun on your face.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with a smooth texture and structured tannins. The bright, juicy red fruit takes the lead—cherry and red currant, with a bit of blackberry lurking in the background. The oak aging adds lovely nuances of vanilla, toast, and a little peppery kick. The acidity is fresh, giving it a nice lift and balance, while the finish is long, satisfying, and full of lingering berry and spice flavors.

This Chianti is a perfect partner for all sorts of Italian cuisine. It’ll shine alongside hearty pasta dishes, like a classic ragù or pappardelle with wild boar. It also pairs beautifully with grilled meats, such as steak, lamb, or a simple pizza with fresh tomato, mozzarella, and basil. And if you’re in the mood for cheese, it’s great with aged Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano.
