This shows a lot of floral notes, such as lilacs and violets, together with aromas of dark fruit, cloves and bark. It has medium body and a soft, polished-tannin structure. Juicy, lingering fruit and firm, fine-grained finish. Drinkable now, but better after 2023.
92 points James Suckling
There is something particularly appealing about a second wine from a great Bordeaux estate, especially when it carries the elegance of Margaux at a more approachable price. Confidences de Prieuré Lichine comes from Château Prieuré Lichine, a Fourth Growth estate with roots dating back to the Benedictine monks of Cantenac. Famously revived by Alexis Lichine in the twentieth century, the château is now owned by the Ballande family, with Stéphane Derenoncourt providing winemaking consultancy.
The excellent 2019 vintage delivered ripe, beautifully balanced fruit across Margaux. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot provide the foundation, creating a wine with the fragrant character, supple texture and refined tannins associated with this celebrated appellation.
Deep ruby red with youthful garnet highlights. Blackcurrant, ripe cherry and dark plum mingle with violets, cedar, graphite and a delicate suggestion of tobacco. The palate is beautifully composed, with succulent dark berries, fine grained tannins and refreshing acidity. Subtle notes of cocoa, pencil shavings and dried thyme add savoury interest to a long, polished finish.
Try it with duck confit and lentils, grilled lamb with rosemary, or roasted beetroot and wild mushroom pithivier. Its elegant structure would also be wonderful with slow cooked beef cheeks and a rich red wine sauce.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2035. Already attractive, with the balance and structure to develop greater complexity over the next decade.
