A site of gravelly clay. 25% whole bunch and a more ambitious sleight of hand across 16 months in French oak (50% new) confer authority. This is needed given the density and compelling vinosity of the wine. Texturally compelling. Red and black plum, a waft of Asian exotica, a gentle twist of the pepper grinder and welcome oak pillars for direction. This will age sumptuously.

The Glenguin Estate Aristea Shiraz Biodynamic from the Hunter Valley is a rare and thoughtful expression of Shiraz that blends tradition with modern sustainability. Glenguin Estate, founded by Robin Tedder MW, has long been a champion of low-intervention, site-driven winemaking. The Aristea is the flagship Shiraz, produced from carefully farmed biodynamic vineyards on ancient volcanic and sandy loam soils in Broke-Fordwich, one of the Hunter Valley’s most distinctive subregions. The combination of biodynamic farming, low yields and meticulous small-batch winemaking gives a wine of great purity and finesse.
In the glass, Aristea Shiraz is a deep crimson with garnet highlights. The nose is perfumed and complex, opening with blackberry, dark plum and mulberry layered with spice, violet, black pepper, and hints of leather and earth. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with juicy dark fruits woven through fine tannins and bright acidity. Subtle oak adds cocoa and savoury spice, while a mineral thread from the soils gives precision and length. The finish is long, elegant and savoury, showing the restraint and longevity that Hunter Shiraz is famous for.
Food pairings highlight its savoury edge and freshness: slow-roast lamb shoulder with rosemary, chargrilled kangaroo fillet, venison with juniper, or porcini mushroom risotto. It is also excellent with hard cheeses such as clothbound cheddar. With 15 to 20 years of cellaring potential, it develops notes of tobacco, truffle, dried herbs and leather, rewarding patient collectors.
