From the celebrated hills of Barbaresco, Pio Cesare Barbaresco is a finely tuned expression of Nebbiolo shaped by one of Piedmont’s most historic families. Established in 1881, Pio Cesare has long been a benchmark for traditional yet polished styles, sourcing fruit from a combination of estate vineyards and long standing growers across Barbaresco’s top communes. The result is a wine that captures both the perfume and structure that define great Nebbiolo.
A luminous garnet red sits in the glass with classic Nebbiolo transparency. Aromas unfold with rose petal, red cherry and raspberry layered with orange peel, spice, dried herbs and a subtle earthy note. There is an immediate sense of elegance and lift, quietly complex and inviting.
The palate is medium to full bodied and beautifully structured, delivering vibrant red fruit framed by firm, finely etched tannins and bright acidity. Notes of cranberry, tea leaf, liquorice and earthy savoury nuance build through the mid palate, leading to a long, persistent finish that feels both graceful and quietly powerful. While already expressive, this Barbaresco will reward cellaring over ten to fifteen years, evolving into layers of truffle, dried florals and complex tertiary character.
Braised veal with herbs, porcini risotto shared slowly, or duck cooked with orange and spice. A shift into something timeless, Maria Callas carrying an aria or a late evening Verdi performance, the wine unfolding with the same sense of poise, drama and quiet inevitability.
