2019 Tyrrell's Stevens Shiraz, Hunter Valley

This has rich, ripe red-cherry and plum aromas with some cedary oak influence. This is very fresh. The palate has a smooth, fleshy and glossy texture, packed with red and dark-berry flavors and long, rich, supple tannins. Drink or hold.

Geological features of light sand and red clay, with the oldest vines of the site harking back to 1911. Matured in older 500L and 2500L wood. 2019 reds are stellar, defined by a generosity of extract without slipping into overt fruitiness. This is no exception. Maturation in older oak promotes breadth and a relaxed feel, without any overt oaky clang. It also mitigates shiraz's reductive tendencies. The end result, mid-weighted of feel and savoury, with dark cherry, mulberry, root spice, suede and licorice. Hunter's terracotta notes, embedded. The tenacity of flavour and length, auguring well for a long life.

Tyrrell's has been part of the Hunter Valley's winemaking story since 1858, making it one of Australia's oldest family-owned wineries. Five generations of the Tyrrell family have built an extraordinary reputation for producing wines of authenticity, longevity and regional character, with Chris Tyrrell continuing to champion the estate's historic vineyards and traditional approach.

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Glen Oak vineyard which was previously owned by the Stevens Family. The site on Marrowbone Road in Pokolbin features a combination of light, sandy loams and darker, heavier transitional soil of red clay, with Shiraz planted in the latter. The oldest vines on this site date back to 1911, with current age of vines on average being 60 years.
