2020 Zenato Amarone Classico delivers rich dark fruit, spice and velvety power with iconic Veneto depth, complexity and longevity.
Restrained fruitiness with aromas of raspberries and earth, alongside a complex spicy blend of freshly ground black pepper, milk, mint, bay leaf and cocoa powder. Very youthful. Full-bodied, dense and balanced, with savory flavors of chocolate and cherries, super-tasty style, tight, chalky yet ripe tannins and a fresh, cleansing acidity. Toasty finish. Drinkable now, but best in a year or two.

Few producers have done more to elevate the reputation of Amarone than Zenato. Founded in 1960 by Sergio Zenato on the shores of Lake Garda, the family estate has become one of Veneto's most respected names, renowned for wines that combine power, elegance and remarkable consistency. Today, Alberto and Nadia Zenato continue their father's vision, crafting benchmark wines that showcase the unique terroirs of Valpolicella and the enduring appeal of traditional Amarone.
The 2020 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is sourced from hillside vineyards in the heart of the Classico zone, where Corvina, Rondinella and Oseleta thrive on limestone rich soils. Following harvest, the grapes undergo the traditional appassimento process, drying for several months to concentrate flavours, sugars and complexity. The result is a wine of extraordinary richness and depth, balanced by freshness and structure that prevent it from ever feeling heavy.
Deep garnet red in colour, the bouquet is intensely aromatic, revealing layers of black cherry, dried plum and blackberry alongside notes of dark chocolate, cinnamon and sweet spice. As the wine opens, hints of fig, tobacco, espresso and cedar emerge, adding further complexity. The palate is rich and velvety, delivering concentrated flavours of dark fruits, cocoa and licorice wrapped around polished tannins. Despite its power, the wine retains impressive balance and freshness, leading to a long, warming finish filled with spice, dried fruit and savoury nuance.
This is a magnificent companion for braised beef cheeks, slow roasted lamb shoulder, venison, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or a wild mushroom and truffle risotto. Equally rewarding as a fireside wine on its own, it has the structure and pedigree to evolve beautifully for two decades or more.
