From the maritime vineyards of Margaret River, Loin du Clos Malbec offers a distinctive expression of this variety in a region better known for Cabernet and Chardonnay. 1683 Wines is a small, thoughtful project focused on crafting wines that highlight individual vineyard sites and alternative varieties suited to the coastal climate. The name Loin du Clos, meaning far from the enclosure, reflects both a sense of place and the spirit of exploration behind the wine. Margaret River’s gravelly soils and cooling ocean breezes allow Malbec to develop depth and richness while maintaining freshness and structure.
The 2021 vintage shows a deep crimson colour with vibrant purple hues. Aromas rise with dark plum, blackberry and black cherry layered with violet, cocoa and subtle spice. As the wine opens further notes of liquorice, graphite and gentle earthy complexity begin to emerge. The palate is generous yet finely balanced with supple tannins supporting flavours of ripe black fruit, plum and savoury spice. Fresh acidity from the maritime climate gives the wine energy and length, while careful oak maturation adds polish and texture. The finish is long and smooth with lingering dark fruit and spice.
It works beautifully alongside grilled lamb, slow braised beef, charred vegetables or robust pasta dishes where the wine’s richness and structure can shine.
