This is dense and full of cherry, raspberry, earth, iron and tobacco flavors. A broad base of sinewy tannins lends support, while the lively acidity drives the long aftertaste of red fruit. All of the components are there; this just needs time. 10,830 cases made. Drink: 2029 – 2047

There are few estates in Montalcino with a history quite like Argiano. Its magnificent Renaissance villa dates back to the sixteenth century, overlooking vineyards that have helped shape the reputation of Brunello for generations. Under the direction of Bernardino Sani, the estate has undergone a remarkable transformation, embracing organic viticulture and a more refined approach to Sangiovese. The results have been extraordinary, with the 2018 Brunello named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2023. The 2021 continues that impressive run, emerging from one of the most highly regarded recent vintages in Montalcino.
Made entirely from Sangiovese grown on Argiano's southwestern Montalcino vineyards, the 2021 reflects a growing season that produced beautifully ripe fruit, excellent natural acidity and impressive tannin structure. The estate's limestone and clay soils, combined with cooling breezes, help maintain freshness despite the warmth of southern Tuscany. Maturation in large oak vessels allows the fruit and vineyard character to remain at the forefront, creating a Brunello that favours balance and elegance over excessive weight. There is considerable depth here, but also the energy and restraint that distinguish the finest examples of the appellation.
Bright ruby garnet with a youthful, luminous centre. Wild cherry, redcurrant and ripe raspberry mingle with dried rose petals, violet and blood orange. With air, notes of liquorice, tobacco, cedar and crushed stone begin to emerge. The palate is concentrated yet beautifully proportioned, with succulent red fruit, finely woven tannins and vibrant acidity. Dried sage, orange peel and a subtle earthy character contribute savoury complexity, while the finish is long, fragrant and remarkably persistent. A beautifully complete Brunello, combining the generosity of the vintage with the finesse that has become Argiano's signature.
Wild mushroom pappardelle, porcini risotto or roasted eggplant with tomato and aged Pecorino would make excellent companions. Duck breast with cherries, rosemary roasted lamb or a classic bistecca alla Fiorentina would also complement its depth and structure. Decant for an hour or two if opening young, although a few years in the cellar will reveal an even more compelling side to this outstanding vintage.
Cellaring: Drink 2028 to 2045+. The balance of ripe fruit, acidity and fine tannins suggests excellent development over the next two decades.
