This is dense and full of cherry, raspberry, earth, iron and tobacco flavors. A broad base of sinewy tannins lends support, while the lively acidity drives the long aftertaste of red fruit. All of the components are there; this just needs time. 10,830 cases made. Drink: 2029 – 2047

96 points Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator Jun 2026

Argiano has been part of Montalcino's story for more than four centuries, its magnificent Renaissance villa overlooking vineyards on the southwestern side of the appellation. The estate has enjoyed a remarkable revival under the ownership of André Esteves and the direction of Bernardino Sani, with organic viticulture, careful vineyard management and a renewed focus on the character of Sangiovese. Its Brunello has become one of the region's most admired wines, particularly following the extraordinary success of the 2018 vintage, which was named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2023. The 2021 arrives with equally exciting credentials from a vintage already celebrated for its quality.

Made entirely from Sangiovese, the fruit comes from Argiano's vineyards in southern Montalcino, where limestone and clay soils, generous sunshine and cooling breezes help produce wines with both richness and freshness. The 2021 growing season was marked by warm, dry conditions, but the best sites retained excellent acidity and developed beautifully ripe tannins. Argiano's approach favours elegance over excessive extraction, with maturation in large oak vessels allowing the natural fruit and savoury character of Sangiovese to remain at the forefront. The result is a particularly harmonious Brunello, combining the structure of a great vintage with the estate's increasingly refined style.

Brilliant ruby garnet with a youthful, luminous centre. Wild cherry, redcurrant and ripe raspberry mingle with dried rose petals, violet and blood orange. With air, notes of tobacco, liquorice, cedar and crushed limestone begin to emerge. The palate is concentrated yet remarkably graceful, with succulent red fruit, finely woven tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle earthy notes, dried sage and orange peel contribute a savoury dimension, while the finish is long, fragrant and beautifully defined. There is a wonderful sense of energy here, with the depth and structure to develop into something quite special over time.

Porcini risotto, wild mushroom pappardelle or roasted eggplant with tomato and aged Pecorino would be excellent companions. Duck breast with cherries, slow roasted lamb with rosemary or a classic bistecca alla Fiorentina would also suit its generous but elegant character. Decant for an hour or two if opening young, although a few more years in the cellar will reward patience.

Cellaring: Drink 2028 to 2045+. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin in the 2021 vintage suggests excellent long term development.
