The Armand Heitz Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Rouge is a distinctive Pinot Noir from one of the most historic premier cru sites in Chassagne. While the village is more often associated with its powerful whites, Morgeot has long been recognised as a source of structured and age-worthy reds. Armand Heitz, who took over the domaine in 2012, has revitalised the family vineyards with organic and biodynamic farming, crafting wines that are precise, energetic and true to their terroir.
The Morgeot climat sits on heavier clay-limestone soils compared to many neighbouring crus, giving the Pinot Noir darker fruit character, more density and firmer tannins. South-facing exposures ensure excellent ripening while cool breezes from the Côte de Beaune retain freshness and aromatic lift. In the cellar, Heitz uses native yeasts, some whole-bunch inclusion for spice and perfume, and maturation in French oak with a restrained hand on new barrels to preserve purity.
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby hue. Aromas of black cherry, raspberry and redcurrant mingle with rose petal, forest floor, spice and a whisper of smoky mineral. The palate is medium-bodied yet structured, delivering juicy red and black fruits wrapped in fine, chalky tannins and lifted by lively acidity. A savoury earthiness runs through the wine, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish that speaks of its site.
Food pairings match its structure and depth: duck breast with cherry glaze, venison with juniper, roast pork with sage, or vegetarian dishes such as mushroom ragù, lentil stew or truffle pasta. With its concentration and backbone, it will cellar beautifully for 10 to 15 years, developing layers of game, earth and truffle.
