Dark, deep red and inky in the glass. Heady aromas of blue fruits, satsuma plum, Asian spice, cola, dried herbs, licorice and white pepper. Fleshy, mouth-filling and layered in flavour. Blueberry, plum, sarsaparilla, clove and a bunchy, earthy edge are all at play. There’s a lovely softness and suppleness to the palate and the tannins and acidity deliver shape and cut 13 Jun 2024 Drink 2024–2039

This is understated and slightly surly, but its future is as bright as ever. It will need time. It tastes of black cherries, saltbush, dark earth and herbs, with a thin layer of cedarwood oak helping to tie it all together. Tannin is fine and filigreed; length is pulsing and assured. It's medium in weight, and it will become more expressive as it matures.

Best’s Bin 0 Shiraz from Great Western is a true expression of the region’s unique terroir, bringing a blend of elegance, depth, and complexity to the glass. Located in the heart of Victoria, Great Western is known for its cool climate and rich history, producing Shiraz that stands apart from the more typical Australian styles. This Shiraz showcases the depth of character that can come from an area with such a long winemaking tradition, offering an experience that’s both modern and rooted in history.

The fruit for this release is sourced from some of Best’s oldest vines, which have been carefully cultivated over decades. These low-yielding, mature vines contribute to the wine’s concentrated flavors and fine texture. A combination of traditional winemaking techniques and contemporary approaches in the cellar gives it an approachable profile while maintaining a sense of structure and refinement. The result is a Shiraz that balances power with finesse.

The nose opens with rich aromas of dark berries—blackberry, plum, and cassis—followed by layers of spice, black pepper, and a touch of chocolate. Subtle earthy notes of leather and tobacco add depth, offering a glimpse into the wine’s aging potential. On the palate, the experience is bold but balanced, with smooth tannins and a refined mouthfeel. The fruit flavors are concentrated, bringing blackberry and ripe cherry to the forefront, while hints of clove, cinnamon, and dark chocolate unfold as the wine lingers on the tongue. It’s full-bodied yet silky, with a lingering finish that showcases both the fruit and the oak influence in perfect harmony.

This Shiraz is a fantastic match for rich, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with barbecued meats, such as slow-cooked lamb or grilled beef, as well as hearty casseroles, roasted vegetables, or even a charcuterie board. The wine’s structure and depth make it perfect for aging, allowing it to evolve and develop over the years. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for the future, this release captures the essence of Great Western and the timeless appeal of a well-crafted Shiraz.
