2021 Bloody Hill Syrah, Coldstream Yarra Valley

Made by Timo Mayer's son, Rivar Mayer Ferguson, with fruit from a north-facing slope on Hans and Anna Orth's vineyard on St Huberts Road in Coldstream, one-third whole bunches, all seasoned oak. Bright, crimson purple. Redolent of dark cherries, blood plums, a hint of pomegranate, black peppercorns, olives and some floral notes. Medium bodied and delicious straight off the bat, with its dark fruits and chalky, fine tannins. Drink now and over the next 5–8 years. A steal at this price.

Ten-year-old vines from Coldstream, Yarra Valley. The vineyard is on the Valley floor, north-facing. Best and 1654 clone mix. 1/3 Whole bunch, 2/3 de-stemmed co ferment. Purple violets and red plums on the nose. Loads of red fruit on the palate, very soft and juicy with a layer of blackberry leaf to add complexity, medium-bodied Syrah with amazing intensity and concentration for the money.
