Campbells The Barkly Durif is the flagship expression of this bold, inky red grape from one of the families that put Rutherglen on the map. Grown in the warm, sun-drenched conditions of northeast Victoria, this wine is all about power, structure and richness — but delivered with a level of polish and balance that shows just how refined Durif can be in the right hands.
The fruit comes from low-yielding, mature vines on red loam over clay soils. Fermentation takes place in open-top fermenters with regular plunging to build tannin and concentration, followed by ageing in a mix of French and American oak barrels for around 18 months. The style is unapologetically full bodied, but it's not overblown — there’s finesse behind the muscle.
Aromas are intense and layered: black plum, blackberry, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, clove and a touch of ironstone. The palate is dense and firmly structured, packed with dark fruit, roasted coffee, spice and earthy tannins. Despite its weight, the wine carries through with balance and finishes long, savoury and dry.
Food pairing: ideal with slow-cooked beef short ribs, pepper-crusted venison, aged cheddar, or smoky barbecue brisket. Also excellent with mushroom stew or grilled eggplant with harissa.
Cellar potential: built for the long haul. Best from 2026 onward and will evolve beautifully over 15 to 20 years, gaining notes of leather, spice and dried fruit.
