Unwinding in the glass to reveal notions of sweet red berries and plums mingled with orange zest, rose petals and sweet spices, the 2021 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a textural attack that segues into a layered, enveloping mid-palate, framed by sweet, powdery tannins and ripe acids. This combines all the inherent charm of the vintage with rare depth and seriousness.

It has a fragrant and open bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed stone and wilted rose flowers. The palate is lighter than the 2021 with filigree tannins, perhaps airy in style, lightly spiced, quite linear with a saline finish that lingers in the mouth. This grows in the glass over 20-30 minutes, expanding and gaining in terms of nuance. Maybe not in the same class as the previous vintage though frankly, it's not far off.

Classic Pinot Noir’ according to winemaker Alessandro Noli. He has spared no expense to produce a superb wine, declassifying to premier cru swaths of the Clos that didn't meet his expectations. The result has a lovely ripe, expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit with accents of earth and sweet oak spice and a silky precision to the texture that is firm if less powerful than in recent years. The overall result is a beautiful expression of the Morey terroir.

Domaine Clos de Tart Grand Cru Clos de Tart is one of the most revered and historic monopole vineyards in Burgundy, a 7.53-hectare jewel in the Côte de Nuits that has remained entirely intact since the 12th century. It is the largest Grand Cru monopole in Burgundy owned entirely by a single domaine and has produced Pinot Noir uninterrupted for nearly 900 years.
Clos de Tart is nestled just south of the village of Morey-Saint-Denis and sits on an ideal east-facing slope composed of ancient limestone and marl soils with excellent drainage and varied elevation. This diversity within the clos allows for complex blending across parcels and contributes to its singular character—at once muscular, aromatic and endlessly nuanced.
The vineyard was founded in 1141 by the Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey, later passing into private hands after the French Revolution. It was owned by the Mommessin family for over 80 years before being sold to François Pinault’s Artémis Domaines in 2017, aligning Clos de Tart with other blue-chip estates like Château Latour and Domaine d’Eugénie. Today, the wines are crafted by Alessandro Noli, who took over as technical director in 2019, bringing fresh vision and precision to this storied terroir.
Viticulture is organic, and biodynamic practices are being introduced. Everything is done by hand, including rigorous sorting in the vineyard and again at the winery. Fermentations are parcel-specific and often include whole bunches for added structure and aromatic lift. The wines are aged in French oak, typically with a high proportion of new barrels.
Clos de Tart Grand Cru Pinot Noir is a wine of gravitas and grandeur. It offers intense aromatics of black cherry, raspberry, rose petal, crushed herbs, baking spice and forest floor, wrapped in a dense yet refined structure of fine-grained tannins and shimmering acidity. It carries its power with grace, building with air and promising decades of development.
This is a wine built to age. At release, it can be brooding and tight, but with time in the cellar it blossoms into something transcendent—layered, textural, and emotionally resonant.
Pair with refined dishes like duck breast with cherry jus, pigeon with truffle, or simply enjoy it on its own as a meditation in a glass.
