ColleMassari Montecucco Rosso Rigoleto is a fresh, approachable Tuscan red that punches well above its weight. From the lesser-known but increasingly exciting Montecucco DOC — nestled between Montalcino and the Maremma — this wine is a brilliant example of how Sangiovese, when grown on hillside vineyards with coastal breezes and clay-limestone soils, can deliver charm, energy and real depth at a very fair price.
The blend is predominantly Sangiovese (usually around 70 percent), supported by Ciliegiolo and Montepulciano, which add juiciness and soft spice. Fermentation is in stainless steel with native yeasts, and the wine is aged in large neutral oak and cement tanks for about 10 months, ensuring purity of fruit and a supple texture.
The nose is vibrant and expressive, with aromas of red cherry, plum, sweet herbs, and a touch of violet and pepper. On the palate, it’s medium bodied and juicy, showing bright red fruit, a dusting of earthy spice, soft tannins and refreshing acidity. It’s the kind of wine that feels both rustic and polished — the sort of everyday Tuscan red that delivers honest pleasure without pretence.
Food pairing: perfect with grilled sausages, pizza with mushrooms, roast chicken with herbs, pasta all’Amatriciana or Pecorino Toscano. Also great slightly chilled with charcuterie.
Cellar potential: best enjoyed young and vibrant, within 3 to 5 years of vintage, though it can soften further with short-term cellaring
