Rich blackcurrant and blackberry, black olive, a little cedar oak in tow. It’s full-bodied, but balanced, plenty of savoury kind of ferrous Cabernet flavour, some nougat too, some brine, thick stony tannin, and a robust finish of good length. It’s a bold wine, and quite serious, also, it’s very good.

From one of McLaren Vale’s most respected family estates, Coriole has been shaping the region’s identity since Hugh and Molly Lloyd established the vineyard in 1967. Today, Mark Lloyd continues that legacy with a thoughtful, site driven approach, producing wines that favour balance and drinkability over sheer power. Cabernet Sauvignon has always been part of the Coriole story, offering a more medium bodied, savoury take on the variety in this warm coastal region.
The Vale’s Mediterranean climate, with warm days tempered by sea breezes, allows Cabernet to ripen fully while still holding enough freshness to keep things lively. The 2021 vintage delivered excellent conditions, producing wines with clarity, structure and bright fruit.
Deep ruby in colour, the aromatics are lifted and expressive. Blackcurrant and red plum sit alongside bay leaf, dried herbs and a touch of mint. There is a gentle savoury thread, with hints of cedar and spice adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
The palate is medium bodied and finely balanced, with dark and red fruits flowing through soft, well shaped tannins. A line of acidity keeps everything fresh, while subtle oak adds texture and spice. There is a slightly herbal, savoury edge that gives the wine character, leading into a clean, persistent finish.
This is a versatile partner at the table. Roast lamb, grilled meats, or tomato based dishes all work beautifully, as do Mediterranean inspired plates with herbs and olive oil.
Drinking beautifully now and over the next eight to twelve years, as it gains a little more savoury complexity with time.
There is an easy confidence here, a Cabernet that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, instead offering balance, character and a genuine sense of place.
