From the sun drenched hills of the southern Rhône comes a Rasteau that captures both generosity and structure. Domaine La Soumade is one of the benchmark producers of the appellation, led by André Roméro and now joined by his son Frédéric. The estate farms old vine parcels scattered across the rocky slopes and clay limestone terraces surrounding the village of Rasteau, where the Mediterranean climate and the mistral wind shape powerful yet balanced Grenache based wines. With many vines exceeding fifty years of age, yields are naturally low and fruit concentration is high.
Deep ruby with garnet tinges, the aromatics are rich and layered. Ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum rise from the glass alongside notes of garrigue herbs, cracked pepper and subtle liquorice. Hints of cocoa and warm spice add depth, reflecting both the old vines and careful maturation.
On the palate it is full bodied and generous yet surprisingly structured. Dark berry fruit forms the core, supported by ripe tannins and balanced acidity that keep the wine vibrant. Layers of spice, dried herbs and subtle chocolate unfold through the mid palate, leading to a long, warming finish with lingering black fruit and savoury complexity. It is classic southern Rhône Grenache with both power and poise.
Pair with slow roasted lamb shoulder, duck confit, beef daube or grilled Mediterranean vegetables. While delicious now with decanting, this Rasteau will cellar confidently for twelve to fifteen years, developing further notes of leather, spice and earthy complexity.
