For more than 75 years, E. Guigal has been one of the Rhône Valley's defining names. Founded by Etienne Guigal in 1946 and now led by the third generation of the family, the estate has built an extraordinary reputation for producing wines that faithfully express the great terroirs of the Rhône. While best known for its legendary Côte Rôtie releases, Guigal's Châteauneuf du Pape has become a benchmark for the appellation, combining power, complexity and remarkable consistency.
The 2021 vintage brought a return to a more classical Rhône profile, producing wines of freshness, aromatic detail and balance. Sourced from vineyards planted on the famous galets roulés and limestone soils of Châteauneuf du Pape, the blend is dominated by Grenache, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre and other traditional varieties. Long maturation in oak helps shape a wine that captures both the warmth of the Southern Rhône and the elegance of the vintage.
Deep ruby garnet in colour, the bouquet is richly layered with aromas of black cherry, plum and blackberry, intertwined with notes of lavender, thyme and rosemary. Hints of licorice, cracked pepper, leather and warm spice emerge with time in the glass, adding complexity and intrigue. The palate is generous yet beautifully structured, delivering ripe dark fruits, savoury garrigue character and subtle earthy nuances. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity provide balance and freshness, while the finish is long and persistent, carrying flavours of spice, herbs and black fruits.
This is a superb match for slow roasted lamb shoulder, duck confit, beef daube, grilled eggplant with tomato and olive ragù or a rich mushroom casserole. Already highly expressive, the wine has the structure and pedigree to evolve beautifully over the next fifteen years, gaining further savoury complexity with age.
