2023 Domaine Pierre Usseglio et Fils l’Unique VdF Rouge, Rhone

Pierre Usseglio is one of the great names of the Southern Rhône, best known for producing some of Châteauneuf du Pape's most sought after wines. Founded by Francis Usseglio after his family arrived from Italy in the 1930s, the estate has grown into a benchmark producer under the guidance of Jean Pierre and Thierry Usseglio. While renowned for its flagship wines, the family also applies the same meticulous vineyard and cellar standards to its smaller cuvées, often creating some of the region's most exciting value wines.

L'Unique is a Vin de France that allows the Usseglio family the freedom to step outside traditional appellation rules while still showcasing the character of Southern Rhône varieties. Produced from carefully selected parcels and crafted with the estate's trademark attention to detail, it offers a vibrant, fruit driven expression that is both approachable and full of personality. The warm Mediterranean climate and diverse soils contribute richness, spice and freshness in equal measure.

Deep ruby red with youthful purple highlights, the nose bursts with aromas of blackberry, raspberry and dark cherry layered with notes of liquorice, cracked pepper and dried Provençal herbs. Hints of violet and warm spice emerge with time in the glass, adding complexity and charm. Medium to full bodied, the palate is generous and silky, delivering juicy dark berry fruits, plum and savoury garrigue notes. Fine tannins provide structure without heaviness, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and balanced. The finish is smooth, spicy and wonderfully moreish.
