The 2021 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is fabulous. In fact, it is the best edition of this wine yet, as it marries all the aromatic intensity and energy of Lamole with an extra kick of fruit and mid-palate pliancy. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, rose petal, crushed rocks and herbs build into the layered finish. What a wine. Drink 2026-2036

Fontodi Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico DOCG from Tuscany is a beautifully refined and aromatic expression of high-altitude Sangiovese, showcasing a lighter, more ethereal side of this noble grape. Produced by Giovanni Manetti of Fontodi, the wine comes from organically farmed vineyards in the tiny hamlet of Lamole, one of the highest and most historic sites in the Chianti Classico region. This wine represents Manetti’s deep respect for tradition and terroir, combining the purity of Lamole fruit with Fontodi’s trademark precision and elegance.
The Lamole vineyards sit at around 600 metres above sea level, where rocky sandstone soils and cooler mountain air produce Sangiovese of bright acidity, delicate tannin and haunting perfume. The grapes are hand picked and carefully sorted before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. After an extended maceration, the wine matures for 18 months in large French oak casks, allowing it to develop structure and texture while preserving its lifted aromatics and sense of place.
In the glass it shows a luminous ruby red. The aroma is graceful and pure, offering wild strawberry, cherry and red currant with hints of rose, violet, sweet herbs and forest earth. The palate is vibrant and medium bodied, with fine tannins and fresh acidity supporting layers of red fruit, savoury spice and mineral. There’s a sense of precision and transparency that sets it apart, leading to a long, elegant finish that lingers with subtle floral and stony notes.
It pairs beautifully with roast duck, veal, mushroom risotto or pasta with tomato and herbs. It’s also excellent with truffle dishes and aged pecorino. Though immediately captivating for its perfume and finesse, it will age gracefully for 10 to 15 years, gaining depth and savoury complexity while retaining its refined frame.
