This is a delicious wine with a lot of character. Dark and red fruit with hints of crushed stone and toffee on the nose. Fresh and crisp fruit with a tangy character. Smooth tannins with a crisp finish. Vines are on sandy soils at 400 to 500 feet altitude. Drink or hold.
93 points James Suckling
Gran Moraine sits in the Yamhill Carlton AVA, one of Oregon’s most distinctive Pinot Noir zones, known for its marine sedimentary soils and a slightly warmer, more structured expression of the grape. The vineyard itself is carefully laid out across rolling slopes, capturing different exposures that bring both ripeness and balance. Under the guidance of winemaker Shane Moore, the focus is on precision, letting site and vintage shape the wine rather than pushing a house style.
The aromatics show a darker, more grounded profile than many Willamette Pinots. Black cherry and plum sit alongside ripe raspberry, with a lift of rose petal and a gentle spice note. There is a clear savoury layer too, forest floor, dried herbs and a touch of earth, giving the wine a strong sense of place.
On the palate it is medium to full bodied, with fine, structured tannins that give the wine shape and length. The fruit is concentrated yet well defined, carried by a line of fresh acidity that keeps everything in balance. Flavours move from dark berries into more savoury, mineral tones, finishing long with spice and a subtle earthy grip.
Winemaking is handled with a careful, site driven approach, often incorporating whole cluster and measured oak use to build texture and complexity while preserving the vineyard’s character. The result is a Pinot that feels both polished and expressive, showing the depth and structure that Yamhill Carlton can deliver.
This is a natural partner for more substantial dishes. Duck, lamb or pork all work beautifully, and it also pairs well with mushroom based dishes where the wine’s earthy notes can echo the flavours.
Drinking well now with a bit of air, it will continue to evolve over the next eight to twelve years, developing more complexity, spice and savoury character as the structure softens.
