A jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Pinot Noir The Sum takes on fantastic crystalline and pure aromas of wild strawberries, raspberries, dark stones, menthol, and cedar spice, but it’s not very oaky. Medium-bodied, it has ripe tannins, with ripe acidity and a bit more modest acidity compared to the other wines from Zena Crown, but it’s long on the palate, with a more autumnal sensibility, and it’s going to show its best over the next 12-15 years.

Zena Crown sits in Oregon’s Eola Amity Hills, a site shaped by elevation, wind and those cooling Van Duzer Corridor breezes that slow ripening and lock in detail. The vineyard itself has become one of the region’s modern benchmarks, and under the guidance of winemaker Shane Moore, The Sum brings together select blocks to create a complete picture of the estate rather than a single site snapshot.
The wine opens with a beautifully layered aromatic profile. Red cherry and wild strawberry sit alongside darker notes of plum, with rose petal and a gentle spice lift adding complexity. There is a savoury edge too, hints of forest floor, dried herbs and a touch of earth that speak clearly of place.
On the palate it is finely structured and seamless, medium bodied with silky tannins and a line of bright acidity that gives the wine energy and flow. The fruit is pure and precise, moving into more savoury, mineral tones on a long, detailed finish. It feels composed and elegant, with a quiet intensity that builds as it opens.
Winemaking is thoughtful and restrained, often incorporating whole cluster fermentation and careful oak use to build texture and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a Pinot that feels both polished and transparent, a clear expression of the Zena Crown vineyard.
This is a natural partner for refined dishes. Duck breast, roast chicken with herbs, or pork with apple all work beautifully, and it also pairs well with mushroom driven plates where the wine’s earthy side can shine.
Give it a little air now, or cellar for eight to twelve years as it develops more depth, with notes of spice, forest floor and savoury complexity coming forward.
