Aromas of red and black cherry, leather and bark. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Oak-laced red and black fruit washes over the palate, with a generous finish. Earthy, herbal and complex. Crushed stones and suede come through. Delicious. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

A sumptuous wine teeming with raspberry coulis, dried herbs, Seville orange and white pepper accents. Yet I can't extricate my senses from the whiff of smaller oak, used to be sure, but still palpable with its scent of sweet mocha from attack to finish. It adds that little bit of clutter, obfuscating the purity of site, the redoubtable quality of the fruit and the hand behind the wine while drying the finish.

Juxtaposed Old Vine Grenache from McLaren Vale is a rich, expressive wine that showcases the depth and complexity of one of South Australia's most iconic grape varieties. McLaren Vale, with its warm Mediterranean climate and well-drained soils, provides the perfect conditions for Grenache to thrive, producing wines that are vibrant, fruit-forward, and layered with complexity. Juxtaposed, with its focus on minimal intervention and high-quality fruit, has crafted a Grenache that highlights the unique characteristics of old vines, allowing for a wine that is both refined and full of character.

The grapes for the Old Vine Grenache come from some of McLaren Vale’s oldest vines, where the low-yielding, mature plants produce small, concentrated berries with intense flavor. The vines benefit from the warm climate and the influence of the cool sea breezes, which help maintain the freshness and acidity in the fruit. The winemaking process at Juxtaposed focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the natural character of the fruit and terroir to shine through. The wine is fermented in small batches and aged in a combination of French oak and stainless steel, adding subtle complexity while letting the Grenache’s fruit-forward profile remain the focus.

In the glass, Juxtaposed Old Vine Grenache has a deep ruby-red color with purple hues, reflecting the wine’s concentration and intensity. The nose is aromatic and vibrant, with aromas of ripe red fruit such as raspberry, strawberry, and cherry, along with subtle hints of spice, black pepper, and a touch of dried herbs. There’s also a faint floral note, which adds complexity to the bouquet, as well as a hint of earthiness that comes from the old vines and the terroir of McLaren Vale.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with smooth tannins and a plush, velvety texture. The fruit flavors are rich and concentrated, with ripe raspberry, strawberry, and a touch of plum leading the way. The subtle spice from the oak aging adds complexity, while the wine’s refreshing acidity ensures balance and lift. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering red fruit and spice notes that leave a lasting, elegant aftertaste.

Juxtaposed Old Vine Grenache is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bold fruit and smooth tannins make it a great match for grilled meats such as lamb, steak, or pork, as well as Mediterranean-inspired dishes like roasted vegetables, pasta with tomato-based sauces, or charcuterie. It also pairs wonderfully with soft cheeses like Brie, goat cheese, or Gruyère. Whether enjoyed on its own or with food, this Grenache is a perfect example of the quality and character that old vines can bring to a wine.
