I've been oscillating between this and its Wait vineyard sibling, struggling to determine which I prefer. While this is not the winner, at least for now, I suggest you buy both. This may well outpace the other in time. There is more intensity, sap and while 'power' is too philistine a word for these beauties, more oomph. Ferrous, even. Yet the mocha seams of oak are more obvious and weighing on the flow, a minor foible to be erased, surely, with patience. Not the pinot-esque beauty queen Wait, but so much to adore. Raspberry bonbon, candied orange peel, vanilla, cardamon and the tamarind entrance of the Marrakech souk.

Juxtaposed Smart Vineyard Grenache from McLaren Vale is a vibrant and expressive wine that showcases the unique qualities of this iconic Australian wine region. McLaren Vale, known for its warm Mediterranean climate, provides ideal growing conditions for Grenache, a variety that thrives in the region’s sun-drenched vineyards. The Smart Vineyard, known for producing exceptional fruit, contributes to the depth and character of this wine. Juxtaposed, with its innovative approach and attention to detail, captures the essence of McLaren Vale Grenache in a way that is both modern and true to the region’s heritage.
The Grenache grapes for this wine are hand-harvested from the Smart Vineyard, where the soil and climate work together to produce small, concentrated berries with intense flavors. The winemaking process emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural expression of the fruit to shine through. The wine is fermented in open-top fermenters, followed by maturation in a combination of oak and stainless steel, which helps to enhance the complexity while retaining the fresh fruit character that Grenache is known for.
In the glass, Juxtaposed Smart Vineyard Grenache has a beautiful deep ruby color, reflecting its richness and depth. The nose is aromatic and inviting, offering bright red fruit aromas of raspberry, cherry, and strawberry, with subtle hints of spice, black pepper, and a touch of earthy complexity. There are also delicate floral notes and a slight herbal undertone that adds to the wine’s complexity, giving it a multi-dimensional bouquet.
On the palate, this Grenache is medium-bodied with a smooth, silky texture and soft tannins that provide structure without being overpowering. The red fruit flavors are vibrant and fresh, with juicy raspberry, cherry, and a hint of cranberry. There is a touch of spice and black pepper, adding complexity to the fruit profile, while the wine’s acidity ensures it remains balanced and lively. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering red fruit and a subtle earthy note that leaves a clean, refreshing aftertaste.
Juxtaposed Smart Vineyard Grenache is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Its bright fruit and soft tannins make it an excellent match for grilled meats, such as lamb, pork, or steak, as well as Mediterranean-inspired dishes like roasted vegetables, pasta with tomato-based sauces, or grilled sausages. It also pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, soft cheeses like Brie, or even dishes with a touch of spice, such as Moroccan tagine or barbecue.
