Primitivo, aka zinfandel, can make pretty big, shouty wines. Not so much here. Although it has depth and some commanding dark fruits, it saw extended time on skins and walks a savoury line. It’s a bit more Italianate – somewhat validating the synonym choice. Dried blackberry, black plum skin, barberry, licorice root, brown cardamom, tobacco leaf and sarsaparilla. Chewy and bright to finish, the fruit sweetness that can spill out with this grape is neatly contained, and it’s aching for food.

The Kangarilla Road Primitivo from Adelaide Hills is a bold and captivating red wine that brings the rich heritage of this Italian varietal to the cool-climate terroir of South Australia. Known as Zinfandel in the United States, Primitivo thrives in the Adelaide Hills, where the cooler conditions contribute to its vibrant fruit character and balanced structure.
On the nose, the wine reveals a medley of dark plums, blackberries, and ripe cherries, accompanied by hints of dried figs, clove, and a touch of sweet spice. Subtle undertones of chocolate, vanilla, and earthiness add depth and complexity to the aromatic profile.
The palate is medium to full-bodied with smooth, velvety tannins and a lively acidity that provides freshness. Flavors of black fruits are layered with savory elements such as dried herbs and a touch of cedar, leading to a long, satisfying finish with a whisper of spice.
Sourced from carefully tended vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, the Primitivo grapes are handpicked at optimal ripeness to ensure intensity and concentration. The wine is fermented in small batches and aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels, enhancing its texture and adding layers of flavor.
This Primitivo pairs wonderfully with hearty dishes such as braised lamb shanks, beef stew, or wood-fired pizzas with rich tomato sauces. It also complements aged cheeses or dark chocolate desserts, making it versatile for both main courses and indulgent treats. While enjoyable now, the Kangarilla Road Primitivo can be cellared for 5–7 years, developing further complexity and integration.
