2021 La Spinetta Il Nero Di Casanova Sangiovese Terre di Pisa, Tuscany

The rolling hills of Terre di Pisa may sit just beyond the spotlight of Chianti Classico and Montalcino, yet they have quietly emerged as one of Tuscany's most exciting homes for Sangiovese. Drawn to the region's potential, the Rivetti family brought the same meticulous vineyard philosophy that made La Spinetta famous in Piedmont, creating wines that combine Tuscan character with the polish and precision for which the estate is renowned.

The vineyards enjoy warm days, cooling maritime influences and a patchwork of clay and limestone soils that encourage both concentration and freshness. The excellent 2021 vintage delivered fruit of superb balance and aromatic detail, allowing Sangiovese to express its vibrant personality with clarity and finesse. Sensitive oak maturation has added texture and complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit.

Bright ruby garnet in colour, the bouquet reveals aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and plum layered with notes of violet, dried herbs and sweet spice. As the wine opens, hints of tobacco leaf, cedar and earthy nuances emerge, adding further complexity and unmistakable Tuscan charm. The palate is medium bodied and beautifully poised, combining juicy red fruits with silky tannins and lively acidity. There is impressive depth without heaviness, while the finish lingers with savoury spice, floral perfume and mineral detail.

This is a superb companion for wild boar ragù, bistecca alla Fiorentina, porcini pappardelle, rosemary roasted lamb or aged Pecorino Toscano. Already drinking beautifully, it has the balance and structure to continue rewarding over the next decade.
