Monte Antico is produced by the Piccini family, one of Tuscany’s historic wine dynasties, founded in 1882 and now in its fifth generation. The wine was originally created to showcase Tuscany’s ability to blend tradition with accessibility, using Sangiovese as the backbone and adding Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for softness, depth and broad appeal. It has become something of a global favourite, offering genuine regional identity without formality.

The vineyards are spread across central Tuscany, where rolling hills, warm days and cooling breezes create ideal ripening conditions. Galestro and clay soils give Sangiovese its brightness and savoury edge, while Merlot adds plush mid palate weight and Cabernet contributes structure and dark fruit depth. The fruit is harvested at full flavour ripeness, fermented traditionally, then matured in oak to round the wine and add subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit. The focus is harmony rather than power, making the wine generous, balanced and immediately enjoyable.

The aromas are warm and inviting. Ripe cherry and red plum sit at the forefront, followed by blackberry, dried herbs and a gentle floral note. Hints of cedar, cocoa and sweet spice weave through the fruit, with a soft earthy undertone that keeps the wine grounded in its Tuscan origins.

The palate is smooth, medium bodied and generous. Juicy red and dark fruits flow easily across soft, polished tannins, with flavours of cherry, plum and blackcurrant layered with subtle spice and savoury notes. The acidity is bright enough to keep everything fresh and food friendly, while the finish is rounded and comforting rather than firm or drying. It is designed for early enjoyment, though it will hold comfortably for several years.
