A very special wine from one of our grape growing families' vineyards. The Mulraney family are the multi-generational custodians of a beautiful parcel of Moppa land bearing a special three-acre patch of old-vine Shiraz. The vines complete gnarly structure stores and transports an aged resource of nutrients to produce rich, intense fruit flavour.
Peter Lehmann VSV 1893 Shiraz from Barossa Valley is a single-vineyard Shiraz that pays homage to the legacy and craftsmanship of Peter Lehmann Wines. The "VSV" (Very Special Vineyard) series highlights unique vineyard sites across Barossa Valley, and the 1893 Shiraz is sourced from some of the region’s oldest Shiraz vines, planted in 1893. These ancient vines, rooted in Barossa’s rich soils, produce low yields of intensely concentrated fruit, resulting in a wine with remarkable depth, structure, and a true sense of place.
The winemaking team at Peter Lehmann, led by experienced winemaker Nigel Westblade, employs a hands-on approach to ensure each VSV wine captures the essence of its vineyard site. For the VSV 1893 Shiraz, hand-harvested grapes are fermented in small batches and aged in French oak barrels, which allows the wine to develop complexity and balanced oak integration. This careful aging process enhances the wine’s natural richness while preserving the vibrancy of the fruit.
In the glass, Peter Lehmann VSV 1893 Shiraz reveals aromas of blackberry, dark plum, and chocolate, with hints of spice, black pepper, and toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with flavors of ripe black fruit, mocha, and a touch of earthiness, supported by fine tannins and a long, polished finish. This Shiraz is a quintessential Barossa Valley wine, showcasing the power and elegance of old-vine Shiraz in a single-vineyard expression.
