The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is laced with strong floral and savory notes. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin give the 2021 its driving, tense personality. I expect those qualities will be positives for the future, but today the Muncagota is pretty forbidding. Give this time. This is one of the most tense editions of this wine I can remember tasting.

Positioned on the eastern side of Barbaresco, Muncagota enjoys an enviable combination of altitude, limestone rich marl soils and excellent sun exposure. The vineyard consistently produces fruit with superb aromatic lift, finely textured tannins and impressive concentration without sacrificing freshness. The near perfect conditions of the 2021 growing season delivered Nebbiolo of extraordinary purity and balance. Traditional fermentation followed by extended ageing in large Slavonian oak casks preserves the vineyard's individual character, allowing every layer of complexity to emerge naturally with time in bottle.

The colour is a brilliant garnet with youthful ruby reflections. Aromas of red cherry, wild raspberry and blood orange rise effortlessly from the glass, intertwined with dried rose petals, violet, star anise and fragrant wild herbs. As the wine opens, layers of truffle, tea leaf, crushed stone, tobacco and sweet spice reveal increasing depth and complexity. The palate is beautifully proportioned, combining vibrant red fruits with silky yet persistent tannins and bright natural acidity. Notes of cranberry, liquorice, forest floor and subtle ironstone build through the mid palate before finishing with remarkable length, freshness and mineral precision. Powerful yet graceful, it captures the transparency and quiet confidence that define the finest expressions of Barbaresco.
