2021 Tellurian Fiano, Heathcote

Tellurian Fiano is a distinctive and quietly compelling white that shows just how well this southern Italian variety adapts to Heathcote’s ancient landscape. Heathcote is best known for Shiraz grown on Cambrian soils, some of the oldest on earth, but those same iron rich, mineral packed soils also give whites like Fiano texture, savoury depth and natural balance. Warm days build flavour, while cool nights preserve acidity, giving the wine both generosity and line.

Tellurian Wines is led by Alister Purbrick, whose deep belief in site expression underpins everything he does. Fiano is handled with the same respect as the reds. Fruit is picked to retain freshness, fermentation is carefully managed, and winemaking is deliberately restrained to let variety and place speak clearly. The result is a Fiano that feels authentic, textural and very food driven.

In the glass, the wine is aromatic but composed. Pear, quince and stone fruit sit alongside citrus peel, almond meal and subtle herbal notes. There is a gentle earthiness and mineral lift that reflects Heathcote’s soils, giving the aromatics depth rather than perfume alone.

On the palate, Tellurian Fiano is textured and savoury. Stone fruit and citrus flavours move across the palate with a soft, mouth filling feel, supported by fresh acidity and a gentle phenolic grip. The wine finishes dry and persistent, with lingering notes of citrus, nuts and a faint saline edge that invites another sip.

This is a white wine made for the table. It pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, roast chicken, pork, Mediterranean dishes, vegetables or richer pasta styles. It is drinking well now for its balance and texture, but will also develop additional complexity over the next five to seven years.
