A blend of 80/20% 1995-planted cabernet and 1990-planted malbec. Matured in 225L barriques (15% new). A brilliant crimson purple. Aromas of cassis, blackberries, violets and a gentle whiff of cedar emanate from this beautifully put-together wine. Elegant, medium bodied and with super-supple tannins, Sarah Crowe has crafted an approachable and seductive cabernet. The well-deserved winner of the Best Cabernet Blend trophy at the 2022 Yarra Valley Wine Show.

Yarra Yering Agincourt Cabernet Malbec is a deeply structured, savoury red that pays tribute to the traditional Bordeaux blend while expressing the unique character of the Yarra Valley. Sourced from estate-grown vines planted in the 1990s, Agincourt brings together Cabernet Sauvignon’s classic cassis and graphite profile with Malbec’s vibrant fruit and floral lift. It’s a wine of balance and restraint, with firm tannins and a long, dry finish that speaks clearly of its cool-climate origin.

The blend typically sits around 80 to 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 to 20 percent Malbec, with each variety fermented separately before being matured in French oak, around 30 percent new, for 15 to 18 months. Winemaker Sarah Crowe handles the fruit with a light touch, preserving freshness and layering structure rather than extracting for power.

In the glass, it opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, cedar and bay leaf, backed by hints of dark chocolate and gravel. The palate is medium to full bodied, with cassis and mulberry fruit, fine chalky tannins, and a core of savoury spice and earthy grip. It’s a serious wine with poise and tension, ideal for those who appreciate Cabernet blends with integrity and ageing potential.

Food pairing: perfect with rosemary lamb, beef fillet with green peppercorn sauce, mushroom Wellington or chargrilled vegetables with chimichurri. For cheese, try aged cheddar or a firm alpine style like Comté.

Cellar potential: best from 2026 to 2040. Will evolve complexity, softened tannins and graphite depth with time.
