A Mano Primitivo IGT from Puglia is a rich, generous southern Italian red that captures the sun-drenched charm of the region and the vibrancy of its flagship grape, Primitivo. Crafted by Mark Shannon and Elvezia Sbalchiero, A Mano is a labour of love between Californian winemaking precision and Italian terroir. Since its founding in the late 1990s, A Mano has developed a cult following for its honest, flavour-packed wines that offer exceptional value.
The fruit for this Primitivo is grown in the heart of Puglia, near the town of Manduria, where old bush vines thrive in red alluvial soils over limestone. These vineyards, some over 70 years old, deliver low yields and naturally concentrated berries. The warm Mediterranean climate combined with cool nights allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness.
In the glass, the wine is deep ruby with aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, dried figs, wild herbs, and a hint of vanilla. The palate is plush and full-bodied, with dark berries, mocha, a touch of spice, and soft, rounded tannins that make it instantly drinkable but structured enough to pair with hearty dishes. There’s a purity to the fruit, and a brightness on the finish that lifts the whole experience.
This wine is perfect with grilled meats, slow-cooked ragù, hard cheeses or even a classic margherita pizza with a bit of char. It’s approachable now but will evolve nicely over the next 3 to 5 years.
