2022 Ch Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5ème Cru, Pauillac

A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, the 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a brilliant classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, violets and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that exhibits beautiful structural refinement and purity of fruit. Classy and integrated, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day and less forbiddingly structured version of this estate's brilliant 1982.

The 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. Warm cassis, black cherry preserves, and kirsch aromas leap from the glass, followed by touches of chocolate mint, cedar, and pencil lead. The medium to full-bodied palate features fine-grained tannins and bold freshness to support the tight-knit red and black berry layers, finishing long and lifted. This is wonderfully energetic! pH 3.57.

A very nice scent, with spice, dried herbs, lots of cassis and clear tobacco notes, mineral undertones, extremely complex. Concentrated on the palate, but not fat, very athletic, razor-sharp tannins, top acidity, the fruit is crisp, the alcohol is not excessive, the wine shows a grandiose arc of suspense from the start to the finish. Red fruit back aromas, spice. Once again excellent, if not to say the best I've tasted here so far

Deep vibrant nose, aromatic and scented with floral notes and soft hints of liquorice, earth, blackcurrants, black cherries and herbal-edged raspberries. Succulent and sharp, zingy and tangy straight away. Lovely purity and focus, smooth but fine-grained tannins make the impact and give the delicate but so appealing structure. Lovely precision and generosity here, feels elegant and lively with good fruit persistence, mouthwatering acidity and liveliness. Intense but pure, layered but almost light, with an undercurrent of wet stone and graphite giving the mineral touches alongside subtle spice. Well made and so easy to enjoy. 3.65pH.
