Leading off the 2022s, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Bernardine is a ripe, sun-kissed beauty with sweet red fruits, some peppery, floral, garrigue-like nuances, medium body, ripe, integrated tannins, and a great finish.

Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine is a beautifully traditional yet polished expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered appellations. Produced by Michel Chapoutier, one of France’s most influential and quality-driven winegrowers, this wine embodies the rich history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape while showcasing a modern sensibility rooted in biodynamics and terroir transparency.

La Bernardine takes its name from a historic house once owned by Bernardine monks and now restored under the Chapoutier umbrella. Unlike many cuvées in the region that blend Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre, La Bernardine is crafted almost entirely from Grenache grown on the iconic galets roulés—large, sun-warmed river stones that define the region. These stones radiate heat into the vines during cool nights and help ripen the fruit evenly, lending the wine its signature richness and depth.

Michel Chapoutier’s approach is all about expressing place. The fruit is hand-harvested and sorted, then fermented in concrete vats with minimal intervention. Maturation continues in concrete tanks to preserve freshness and let the fruit and terroir shine without too much oak influence. This style results in a Grenache that’s plush, powerful and perfumed, but never overdone.

In the glass, La Bernardine opens with aromas of raspberry compote, stewed cherry, licorice root, lavender and wild herbs—the classic garrigue that signals southern Rhône. The palate is generous and velvety, with supple tannins, a savoury undercurrent, and warm spice-laced fruit unfolding in layers. There’s great balance here, with acidity holding everything together and leading to a smooth, persistent finish.

It’s a brilliant match for Provençal lamb shanks, duck with black olives, ratatouille or aged hard cheeses. While approachable now, especially with decanting, it will develop further aromatic complexity and textural softness over the next 8 to 12 years.

La Bernardine consistently earns praise from critics for its authenticity, drinkability and ability to age. It’s a wine that honours the history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, while reflecting the clarity and finesse that Michel Chapoutier brings to all his wines.
