2022 Dm des Perdrix Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy

Domaine des Perdrix is based in Premeaux Prissey, just south of Nuits Saint Georges, and has been owned by the Devillard family since 1996. The family is also behind Château de Chamirey in Mercurey and Domaine de la Ferté in Givry, giving them deep roots across Burgundy. Perdrix is best known for its holdings in Nuits Saint Georges, including the monopole Premier Cru Aux Perdrix, but the Bourgogne Rouge provides a much more affordable look at the domaine’s style.

The generous 2022 vintage was a welcome return to quantity after the tiny 2021 crop, while quality was excellent. Warm, sunny conditions gave beautifully ripe fruit, yet good acidity kept the wines fresh and energetic. Here the appeal is fragrance and supple red fruit rather than the structure of the domaine’s Nuits Saint Georges bottlings, making it particularly attractive for drinking in its youth.

Bright ruby with a translucent edge, opening with Morello cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry. Violet and blood orange add perfume, followed by clove, black tea and a subtle woodland note. The palate is medium bodied and silky, with juicy red cherry framed by fine tannins and lively acidity. Orange peel and gentle earthy spice appear through the middle before a fragrant, savoury finish.

Crispy duck and shiitake dumplings would be excellent, alongside ocean trout with soy and ginger, roast chicken with mushrooms, char siu pork or a Gruyère and caramelised onion tart. Our pick is the trout. Its richness works beautifully with the bright red fruit and gentle earthiness without overwhelming a relatively delicate red Burgundy.
