The 2022 Clos des Lambrays contains 80% whole bunches (100% in the very old vines, a lower proportion elsewhere). A fine even deep ruby purple. The bouquet is backward with still a suggested intensity of fruit that can easily cope with the stems. Beautifully suave with an enveloping dark red fruit, a very graceful finish on silky, refined tannins, and we don’t often say silky for Morey St Denis. They are caressing, according to Jacques. The floral touch works throughout, beautifully long and sensual. Drink from 2032. Tasted Nov 2023.

Domaine du Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits is one of Burgundy's most revered and prestigious wines. Located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays is a historic vineyard with deep roots dating back to the 14th century. This Grand Cru site is known for producing wines that combine elegance, depth, and a distinct sense of place, and Domaine du Clos des Lambrays has maintained that legacy while embracing modern biodynamic practices to ensure a harmonious balance between nature and the vine.
The vineyard has been biodynamically farmed for many years, with a focus on sustainability and respecting the natural rhythms of the land. This approach is rooted in the belief that the vineyard’s health is crucial to the quality of the wine, and the use of biodynamic practices allows the Clos des Lambrays terroir to truly express itself in every bottle. The vineyard is nestled on the slopes of the Clos des Lambrays, a 9-hectare plot that benefits from excellent sun exposure and rich, well-draining soils, ideal for producing complex Pinot Noir wines.
The winemaking at Domaine du Clos des Lambrays is overseen by a team dedicated to producing wines of exceptional quality and finesse. The current winemaker, Thierry Brouin, has been at the helm for many years and is known for his meticulous attention to detail. Under his guidance, the estate has embraced organic and biodynamic principles, ensuring that every step of production is focused on expressing the unique characteristics of the Clos des Lambrays vineyard.
In the glass, Domaine du Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru reveals a deep ruby color that signals its richness and intensity. The nose is complex and layered, offering aromas of ripe dark fruits such as black cherry, blackberry, and plum, complemented by earthy undertones of forest floor, mushroom, and a subtle hint of spice. There’s also a touch of floral notes, such as violet, and a fine, integrated oak character that adds depth without overpowering the wine’s purity.
On the palate, this Grand Cru is full-bodied yet graceful, with silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that provides structure and balance. The dark fruit flavors are rich and intense, with layers of black fruit, earth, and spice, all framed by the wine’s mineral backbone. The finish is long and complex, with the potential to evolve beautifully with age. Critics have long praised the wine for its depth, balance, and ability to age gracefully, and it remains a benchmark for Pinot Noir in Burgundy.
Domaine du Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a wine that pairs well with rich dishes. Think roasted meats like duck or lamb, game meats such as venison, or hearty stews. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses, such as Comté or aged Brie. A wine like this, with such pedigree and complexity, is perfect for special occasions or for collectors looking to age it in their cellars.
