The '22 vintage wasn’t particularly easy, but the intent and meticulous attention of viticulturists shines bright in the best wines. The '22 is on fire, with cherry compote, blue plum skin and rhubarb stem. The selected 25% whole bunch adds just the right amount of sinewy, woodsy herbs backed by savoury potting clay and tree bark. Red lingonberries pop like caviar on the mid-palate and the staying power of graceful but astute tannins is why this wine will age like a dream. This is built for almost any medium rare meat you can throw at it – lamb, game or grass-fed beef. It's a wine for the very best crystal and only the best of friends for company. Stunning.

Blackberry, cola and dark smoky notes reluctantly emerge on the nose of this young, closed wine. The palate is equally restrained; the fairly concentrated dark fruit only appearing towards the back as it rises above the serious, chocolaty tannins and wood. Compact, really quite oaky and backward, this does have sneaky length and under the fine structure is plenty of promise and perfume. Give it a couple of years in the cellar to integrate, and watch it bloom 29 Jan 2025 Drink 2027–2037

Dog Point Pinot Noir Organic from Marlborough is a beautifully pure and structured expression of cool-climate Pinot Noir, crafted with precision and detail by one of New Zealand’s most respected producers. Grown in the Southern Valleys subregion on organically certified estate vineyards, this wine reflects Dog Point’s low-intervention philosophy and commitment to site-driven winemaking.

The vines are dry farmed on clay-rich soils, which give the wine its depth and fine tannic frame. Fruit is hand picked and sorted, with a portion of whole bunch fermentation to add aromatic lift and textural complexity. The wine is aged for about 18 months in French oak, a portion of it new, allowing for integration and subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit.

The nose opens with wild strawberry, black cherry, violets, and a hint of smoky earth and thyme. The palate is medium bodied and layered, showing red and dark berry fruit, dried herbs, savoury spice and fine, chalky tannins. There’s real energy and length, with a mineral backbone and a lingering finish that combines fruit with forest floor and subtle oak tones.

Food pairing: excellent with duck breast, roast pork, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon or truffle gnocchi. Also perfect with hard cheeses or herb-roasted chicken.

Cellar potential: impressive ageing potential. Enjoy it now with a decant or cellar for 8 to 12 years, where it will develop more savoury and tertiary notes with time.
