Deep, youthful purple tinted colour with a rather reserved nose of broken rock, graphite, dark chocolate and sooty smokiness. The wine is full bodied and sppple-textured, the depth of flavour profound and the texture fleshy, dense and resoundingly smooth. Tremendous flavour, delivered with remarkable structure and accessibility. 28 Sep 2024 Drink 2024–2044

The Eisenstone Mattcanoss Greenock Shiraz from the Barossa Valley is a powerful and finely crafted expression of single-vineyard Shiraz, highlighting the character of the Greenock subregion. Eisenstone Wines, established by winemaker Stephen Cook, is dedicated to creating premium, terroir-driven wines that showcase the diversity of Barossa Valley’s subregions.

The Greenock Shiraz is sourced from low-yielding vines in the Greenock subregion, known for its rich red soils and warm climate. These conditions produce intensely flavored grapes with ripe tannins and deep concentration. Winemaking emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard’s character to shine. The wine is matured in French oak barrels, enhancing its complexity and balance.

In the glass, it exhibits a deep, vibrant ruby hue. The nose reveals a rich bouquet of blackberries, dark plums, and cassis, interwoven with notes of mocha, black pepper, and a touch of vanilla from the oak.

On the palate, the Eisenstone Greenock Shiraz is full-bodied and velvety, showcasing flavors of dark fruits, licorice, and dark chocolate. The wine’s fine-grained tannins and well-integrated oak provide structure, while a balanced acidity ensures freshness. The finish is long and luxurious, with layers of spice and fruit lingering elegantly.

This Shiraz is a perfect pairing for grilled lamb, barbecued ribs, or slow-cooked beef dishes. Its bold and complex profile also makes it a fantastic wine for special occasions or cellaring. With proper storage, it can evolve beautifully over 10-15 years, gaining additional depth and nuance.
